About CLARB

The Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Boards (CLARB) is a 501(c)(6) nonprofit organization that works to protect the public’s health, safety and welfare by establishing and promoting professional licensure standards. Our members are the licensure boards across the United States and Canada.

The Landscape Architect Registration Examination (L.A.R.E.)

The L.A.R.E. is a four-part fully computerized examination designed to determine whether applicants for landscape architectural licensure possess sufficient knowledge, skills and abilities to provide services without endangering the health, safety and welfare of the public. It is prepared and scored by CLARB in accordance with all current standards for fairness and quality of licensure exams.

Planning and Design

Construction Documentation and Administration

Grading, Drainage, and Stormwater Management

In order to obtain a license to practice landscape architecture, candidates must have:

A degree from an accredited university
One to four years of working experience (internship) prior to taking a uniform exam.

The Landscape Architect Registration Exam (LARE) is a three-day national comprehensive exam that may include a separate state section. The exam is administered and graded by the Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Board (CLARB).
